BECOME A COMPETENT COMMUNICATOR
To become a Competent Communicator you need to complete the 10 Prepared Speech Projects from the Toastmasters International Competent Communicator Manual. Each speech project focusses on another facet of public speaking, and sometimes the one project buils on a previous one and other times you combine and exapand attained competencies by adding new traits to the ones you have already mastered thereby harnessing your total presentation value set into a powerful skillset you can use in delivering compelling and quailty speeches.
10 COMPETENT COMMUNICATOR SPEECH PROJECTS
The ribbons below are used to acknowledge your progress as you go along. These ribbons are tangible proof that you are making progress and is a token of the club's confirmation of that fact.
SPEECH COMPLETION - RIBBON SET
You are recognised for each speech project you complete successfully on your path of becoming a Competent Communicator. This is a fantastic experience and is worthy of your best effort. My own experience during this process was that the Evaluators and Members support and help you along the way. Moreover, the evaluation process is such that you are evaluated from a variety of perspectives thus improving your skills with specific and useful information for fine tuning.
It happens sometimes that a club members who listened to your speech phone you afterwards and of the record assist you with specific techniques or advise so that no-one else even know that you have been coached, except you and this person.
This has happened to me a few times, and I promise you, I was very thankful for this off the record evaluation since the information was specific and to the point, and help me tremendiously.
These Ribbons are not just handed out, they are earned, and that makes the process so much more fun. You never know what can happen.
MENTORSHIP
Good leaders are also good mentors, and since Toastmasters uses Servant Leadership principles also, we tend to lead by setting an example and standard to follow. Have you heard the cliché "been there, done that, got the t-shirt", well exactly. Your feollow Toastmasters have done it already, they know because they have done it themselves.
As you progress your skills and standard become such that you can mentor someone else with ease. This is where it becomes a lot of fun. This not only help you to become more self confident, but is also rewarding because you can see how your mentorship is helping another member to grow and excel.
At Forum Toastmasters we encourage members and give credit to those individuals who help others grow along the way, and we do that by way of giving them recognition via awards, trophies and certificates.
Mentorship extend even outside the context of the just our club. There are a number of programmes presented from time to time, here are a few:
TIE OF EXCELLENCE
Ties make good gifts (for men that is). In fact we all know men who collect them, and so when you complete your Competent Communicator speeches, you may want to treat yourself with a genuine Toastmasters tie, a Certificate from Toastmasters International will issued to acknowledge your achievement and you may opt for Toastmasters International to send a letter of recognition to your employer so that they take note of your verbal mastery, acknowledging your achievement.
MENTORSHIP AWARDS
Mentors are acknowledged for their leadership and excellence and obtains credits for this noble act of service in various ways. All mentorship roles that I can think of in a Club context counts as credits towards a Competent Leadership Project task or role and members are evaluated for these mentorship roles also. Supporting our fellow Toastmasters creates a win-win opportunity for all involved because it gives mentors the platform to mentor and be evaluated and on the other hand it give speakers the oppportunity to grow their speaking skills.
